When it comes to doing the whole grrl thing, then making sure a look hangs together is key to success. Make-up is something that has to be done very well or it can look just plain hideous or even worse: ridiculous! But learning how to do make-up properly is something that takes patience and practise as you build knowledge as well as expertise. I’m still working on it, but I’m happier with the results these days: and the more often you do it the better it gets I find.

It can also be useful to read the glossy mags to get a feel for current trends and vibes and to look for inspiration for looks to try. With an idea then of what you are trying to achieve the next trick is to learn from the experts: and what the experts do is use decent kit. Decent make-up brushes are not massively expensive and they should last ages. I have found brushes a much better way of applying eye make-up and foundation than the cheap sponge tips that come with them or just smudging everything with fingers (hey, this isn’t finger painting!).

The quality of the make-up makes a big difference: if you’ve been using cheapy stuff, treat yourself to a bit of decent kit and notice the difference.
Getting the knowledge or skill can be done in many ways: a make-up lesson is certainly worth the investment but you’ll still need to go home and practise, practise, practise. And then there are the video tutorials on the web, these are handy as you can revisit them for a reminder – here are two of my faves:

the girl in this video is AMAZING, the transformation is breath taking and just shows what skilfully applied make-up can achieve:
